Human library for the students of Zlatarski School
The motto of the first Human Library, organized for Zlatarski School Students, is “Do not judge a book by its cover! Especially when it’s not a book!” on 13 February at 6.00pm The Human Library is an innovative method, designed to promote dialogue, reduce prejudices and provoke deeper understanding. Created as an event for the first time in 2000 in Denmark, the Human library helps different groups of people to break stereotypes, challenging the common prejudices in a positive and humorous way. The meeting is informal and the goal is for “the readers” to learn new things by changing their way of thinking through conversations with different people (“the books”) who represent certain stereotyped groups. Guests choose from a list of “books” those which seem most interesting, and begin to “read”. Every 20 readers have to choose another “book”.
It is not easy to confront their prejudices As a reader, everyone will have the chance to meet face to face with someone with a certain label, which may initially seem intimidating, but then act liberating. If students take the first step in recognizing what stereotypes they have and towards which group of people, then they are already on the right track.
