Fun Chemistry experiment at Zlatarski International School of Sofia
Students from grade 9 and 10 of the Zlatarski International School – Sofia made this fun experiment in a school laboratory, called ‘Elephant toothpaste’.
We show an experiment of a chemical reaction of the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide H2O2.
In this experiment, we mixed liquid detergent for washing dishes with a concentrated solution of potassium permanganate. The resulting mixture is added to 30% hydrogen peroxide.
‘This experiment proved a great attraction and students made it with interest’ said P. Bozhkova, teacher of chemistry and physics at the Zlatarski International School.
Decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, oxygen swells the washing up liquid in a large foam and discolors the solution of potassium permanganate. The reaction is exothermic and proceeds rapidly with evolution of heat.
